After spending 2 day backing up everything, resetting my laptop to factory condition and then reinstalling everything all the way back to Windows 8.1 I found that this still didn’t solve the problem. I contacted Sony who advised me to do a clean install and follow all instructions on their website, so this is what I proceeded to do. I have a Sony Vaio running Windows 8.1 64bit and after updating I found that I had an unknown device which was "Intel(R) HM76 Express Chipset LPC Controller - 1E59)" and it had a yellow exclamation mark next to it in the Device Manager.
